The University of Strathclyde in the United Kingdom recently announced the development of a new mass transfer technology for MicroLEDs. Through continuous roller transfer technology, more than 75,000 MicroLEDs can be transferred accurately. The team also developed an automatic measurement system for the transfer quantity and yield.

The team pointed out that the roller transfer process can realize a huge amount of MicroLED transfer. A 320x240 pixel array can be transferred in one transfer, and more than 75,000 MicroLEDs can be transferred. The relative position accuracy reaches submicron level (Submicron), and can maintain the pixel array Geometric structure, positioning error, and design deviation are controlled below 1 μm.

In addition, the team also uses an automatic sub-micron precision metrology system with a simple optical microscope to evaluate large-scale quantities of parts while also evaluating yield.

In addition to MicroLED mass transfer, the process can be used in other types of devices, including silicon processes, PCBs, and in biomedical applications such as solar device manufacturing, drug delivery systems, biosensors, and tissue engineering.
